Guide to Travelling in a Motorhome with a Dog

Travelling in a motorhome with your dog can be hugely rewarding. With a little planning, you can make the trip comfortable and enjoyable for both of you. Our motorhomes are pet friendly, and here is how to get the most from your trip.

1. Before You Travel

  • Vet check-up: Make sure your dog is healthy and up to date with vaccinations, flea and worming treatments. If you are travelling abroad, check the current pet travel requirements well in advance.
  • Identification: Your dog should wear a collar with an ID tag showing your current contact details, and be microchipped (a legal requirement in the UK).
  • Comfort items: Bring your dog's favourite bed, blanket and toys. Familiar items help reduce anxiety and make the motorhome feel like home.
  • Let us know: Please tell us when you book that you are bringing a dog. A pet valeting fee of £50 applies to cover the extra cleaning.

2. Packing Essentials

  • Food and water: Pack enough of your dog's regular food for the whole trip, plus collapsible bowls, treats and any medication.
  • Lead and harness: Bring a sturdy lead and harness for walks, and a long line or tether for use outside the motorhome.
  • Cleaning supplies: Pack poo bags, towels for muddy paws and a throw or old blanket to protect the furnishings. A small brush is handy for fur.
  • First aid kit: Include a pet first aid kit with bandages, antiseptic wipes, tweezers and any prescribed medication.

3. Safety on the Road

  • Secure your dog: Use a travel crate or a crash-tested harness to keep your dog safe while the motorhome is moving. An unrestrained dog is a distraction for the driver and at risk in a sudden stop.
  • Regular breaks: Stop every two to three hours so your dog can stretch, drink and relieve itself.
  • Keep cool: Never leave your dog unattended in a hot motorhome. Park in the shade, keep it ventilated and carry plenty of fresh water.

4. Campsite Considerations

  • Dog-friendly sites: Check that your campsite accepts dogs. Some have dog-walking areas, while others have restrictions or limit the number of dogs.
  • Outdoor space: Use a long line or portable pen so your dog can enjoy the outdoors safely.
  • Noise and wildlife: Keep your dog on a lead around livestock and wildlife, and follow local signs, especially in the countryside and on the coast.

5. Daily Routines

  • Exercise: Regular walks and playtime keep your dog healthy and settled.
  • Feeding: Keep to your usual feeding schedule, but avoid feeding just before a journey to prevent travel sickness.
  • Grooming: Brush your dog regularly to reduce shedding, and check for ticks after walks in long grass or woodland.

6. If Something Goes Wrong

  • Know the local vets: Look up vets near your route and stops, including an emergency out-of-hours number.
  • Keep contacts handy: Save your own vet's details on your phone.

7. Enjoying the Journey

  • Explore together: Look for dog-friendly beaches, walks, pubs and attractions along your route.
  • Capture the memories: Take plenty of photos of your dog enjoying the trip.

Travelling with a dog takes a little extra planning, but it is well worth it. With the right preparation, you and your four-legged friend can enjoy a safe, comfortable and memorable adventure together.
