UK Surf Trip

The UK has some of Europe's best surf, from the beaches of Cornwall and Devon to the reef breaks of the far north of Scotland. A motorhome lets you stay close to the water, follow the swell and wake up with the waves on your doorstep. Here is a short guide to planning a surf trip around the UK.

Best Time to Go

Autumn is often the best time for surf, as the Atlantic swells arrive and the water is still relatively warm. Spring is good too, with fewer crowds. Summer waves are smaller and more suited to beginners, but the beaches and campsites are very busy. In winter the surf is powerful, but you will need a thick wetsuit and plenty of experience.

Where to Surf

  • Newquay, Cornwall: The surf capital of the UK. Fistral Beach and Watergate Bay offer reliable waves and plenty of surf schools for beginners.
  • Polzeath, Cornwall: A long, sandy beach on the north coast with gentle waves, popular with learners and families.
  • Croyde, Devon: A classic North Devon beach break with powerful waves, a lively surf scene and good conditions for intermediate surfers.
  • Llangennith, Gower: A long, wild beach on the Gower Peninsula in South Wales, with a good choice of waves.
  • Thurso, Scotland: Thurso East is a well-known reef break for experienced surfers, with dramatic scenery. It fits neatly into a North Coast 500 trip.

Where to Stay

Many car parks near the beaches don't allow overnight stays, and some have height barriers. The easiest option is a campsite near the beach, and the most popular sites fill up in summer and at weekends, so book ahead. Check the pitch size and that the campsite accepts motorhomes.

Practical Tips

  • Check the surf report: Look at the forecast for wave height, tide and wind before you set off, and ask at the local surf shop.
  • Surf safely: Surf at a lifeguarded beach between the red and yellow flags, and check the RNLI beach safety information. If you're a beginner, take a lesson.
  • Wet kit: Bring a large waterproof bag or a bucket for wet wetsuits and towels, so the inside of the motorhome stays dry. Rinse kit and hang it outside to dry.
  • Boards: Please don't strap boards to the roof or fit racks to a hired motorhome. Talk to us first about the best way to carry them.
  • Keep warm: A hot drink and warm clothes for after your session make all the difference, even in summer.
  • Respect the beach: Take your litter home, follow local signs and be considerate to other surfers.
